GATESVILLE, TEXAS

Here it is! As you are going down the hill you will see the town where I grew up. This is Gatesville, Texas. On the right side you can see the courthouse. I can remember the first time that I came to Gatesville from Maryland, I could not believe my eyes. I was so use to things being the way they are here in Utah. Lots and lots of different streets, and where most of the time you have to go from one street to another in your car to get where you want to go. That is unless you are going to the mall and able to find everything there. But in this small town where I grew up most of the major stores were around the courthouse. They call it the town square. Because on each side of the court house there would be little shops and offices. They even had an old western saloon. This was owned by my first husband's uncle, he had this old western saloon that he made into a museum, and also next to it was a Pawn Shop. Since that time things have really changed. My exes uncle is deceased and there no longer is a pawn shop or a museum standing there. One of my favorite things on the square was when Gatesville turned 100 years old and we had a shiveree. There was so much activity around the courthouse as well as other places in Gatesville. Everyone dressed up like in the frontier days and they had booths set up selling stuff like food, crafts and they even had a fiddlers contest on a stage right there in front of the courthouse. Than on Saturday night they had a live band and street dancing. It was so much fun, because it did not cost anyone anything to come and enjoy their selves. Also I remember my grandfather had built a beautiful star that he would go up on the very top of the courthouse every year at Christmas and put it for everyone to see all over the territory. You could see that star for miles and miles, and I remember how proud I was of my grandfather for doing that. Not only had he designed and built it but to go up there being as dangerous as it was and place it on top of the court house. I lived there and went to school from the seventh grade to the twelfth. I married my high school sweetheart there and lived there until I eventually moved away. It is where my family is buried and that includes my son Cody. I will always have very fond memories and love this town. It had become my roots.
